Around the Clock Care

Until recently, I’ve never really understood how essential around the clock care is. Let me explain.

Some of you may remember how a few months ago my grandfather fell and broke his hip.  He had hip replacement surgery, and spent a few days in the hospital. After which he was discharged to a skilled nursing center.

Unfortunately, in the middle of the night he tried to get out of bed to use the restroom, fell again and broke his other hip.

This is 2 major breaks in a matter of 4 weeks- so he had to undergo another major surgery- which was successful (thank goodness), and now is back in the skilled nursing rehab.

After all this- his mind is a bit fuzzy and he STILL keeps trying to get out of bed in the middle of the night.

Why on earth would he do that?

Keep in mind, this is a gentleman who is fiercely independent.

A man who at age 92 lived independently.

A man who won a Purple Heart in WWII for his bravery.

A man who can’t bear the thought of relying on someone to help him get out of bed to use the restroom.

And yet- he needs the help.  If he has another fall, and breaks another bone- it would be very serious and could be the end of his life.

Which is why around the clock care is so essential. By paying a caregiver to sit by his bedside all night long and assist him should he need to get up- we are literally saving his life.

Yes, the rehab has staff to assist- but my grandpa is impatient- and when he feels the urge to get out of bed, he doesn’t want to wait 10 minutes for the staff to answer his call for help.

Yes, it is expensive paying someone to just sit there while he sleeps.

But, should he have a need in the middle of the night it will be immediately answered.

Because when you really love someone- you will do whatever it takes to keep them safe, comfortable and happy. That is exactly why we have chosen to have overnight care.

It won’t be forever, but in the short term we know my grandfather is in excellent hands and my mother can sleep at night.
